My son recently started a new job. This got me thinking about the boring nature of most induction presentations. Presenters at inductions usually just start talking about what they do. Few of them think at all about what the audience might want to know and how they could make the presentation interesting. This is such a waste of an important opportunity. Your presentation at the induction creates an early and lasting impression of you, your unit and the organisation.
There is a very useful section on induction programmes in general at the excellent Business Balls Site
There's not much around about the induction presentation itself. This is probably because it is not that hard! Next time you get asked to present at an induction, just work out interesting answers to these two questions:
- What would my audience like to know about what we do?
- How can I get my audience actively involved in what I am telling them?
See, it wasn't that hard was it?
If you really want to add a couple of extra touches, also think about:
- Who is attending the induction and when would they come into contact with my work team?
- What are we doing that would be interesting to any ordinary person?
Most of this won't take you long to figure out. The active involvement part will be the longest but if you can find a good answer to that question, you audience will be very grateful. Hey, this is how the group will remember you!
