Ellen Finkelstein's recent monthly PowerPoint tips has an excellent article on slide design for non-designers.
It has substance, but is manageable for us non-design people. Take a look. Notice that she points out a current fashion shift - using clip art is non-cool, using photos is cool. Remember that!
